To blog that is?

It's tough, when people have things like myspace, facebook, msn, how about work yeah work get's in the way and let's not even forget about things like vacation, travelling and so on and so forth.

Anyway, I have now found sometime, not a lot of time but I have found sometime to sit down and organize my thoughts. Well as organized as they can be.

I recently went on a trip with 32 Sea Cadets to France and Belgium. The purpose of the tour as to see history and visit the War Cemeteries from the First and Second World War as well as participating in the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

It is fair to say that this experience was a life altering experience for many of the cadets involved. Whether, or not they realize it now or 5 years down the road...I know what we did made an impact.

As for everything else, I enjoy blogging...I hope those of you have noticed I have switched back to conservative blue, I can't imagine why I ever had orange up their in the first place.

So let me go back to Hyde Park and get on my soap box for a moment.

I had a pretty good discussion with a friend while in France, I know now that I will not stay here forever...my life started in this great province and I know my life will probably end in Manitoba as well...but the time spent between isn't going to be here.

Is it that Manitoba doesn't possess enough growth or opportunity to keep me here...that really isn't the case, is it that the economy is stagnant and job creation is purely directed towards the Civil Service, the answer would be yes...but that isn't the reason either.

So what is the reason you ask?

Well, if going away taught me anything, it's that their is enough opportunity outside of this province all I have to do is go look for it...but rest assured I am here for at least two more years while I go to Creative Communications as Red River...after that who knows.

PC Manitoba:

I am heading to the Spring Dinner on Tuesday the 24th, should prove to be a good time. I didn't make it to the fall dinner this year or the AGM but I am really looking forward to being their and running into a lot of people I haven't seen since the leadership.

Some people have pegged me as the guy who walked away...and you know something you are right I did step away. I walked away from pretty much everything except my friends. I walked away from Metis Politics, Provincial Politics and Federal Politics...however I think I have been away long enough and it's about time I reared my ugly head and started pissing people off again.

Afterall, some of you have even accused me of being a self-promoter...which is hilarity at it's finest.

So look to see me at the Spring Dinner don't worry I won't fork anyone in the eye that night...maybe later but not that night.

Glad to see the party is moving forward in a good direction, I like the new logo and the apparent new energy that is flowing from 23 Kennedy, it's a great feeling to see the party invigorated as we move towards a potential election this spring.

Can you believe I am actually posting!!!

Well the reason for this is simple, I woke up early and realized I had over 2 and a half hours to kill before I had to be in the office for our morning sales meeting...hence the post.

So what has been on my mind recently?
Well in all actuality not too much, it's been pretty blah but why...is it the cold weather? maybe, is it the fact that the New England Patriots didn't make it to Superbowl 41? maybe, or is it that I have just been swamped that I haven't had a chance to sit down and think about something meaningful to type? getting warmer, or is it that the manitoba political landscape has become relatively dry and it would be nice for things to heat up? bingo!

So here we are, on a cold Monday morning in February, the Colts have finally removed the proverbial monkey off Dungy and Manning's back and now we can get on with life.

However, let's confirm a few things before the work week starts, let's be certain that the face slap is not the new fist pound, and while playing Rock, Paper and Scissors we do not actually use the items.

Let's lay it on the line here for a moment:
I am a 25 year old male, who works and lives in Manitoba, I have two years of University left, that I pick away at like a fat kid does to a pile of steamed greens and I am relatively content with what I have in life...or am I?

It's hard to say really, I love my job, I love the people who are around me and I am content in knowing that for now I am relatively secure...however on my 25th birthday I realized that their was more I could do, that I had more potential, yet I found I was somewhere that didn't want to cultivate that potential, moreso all it did was promote mediocrity.

That somewhere is Manitoba...now before you start screaming at me, I love Manitoba, I was born here, raised here and will probably retire here...however, in the middle of it all their isn't much to do here...except go to school and hope for that Government Job!

So what is someone like me to do?

Simple, finish school, like a fat kid would finish a smartie, move away and return here to retire...

But in reality, what is the benefit to moving away...doesn't Manitoba have a growing economy (NO), doesn't Manitoba have countless opportunities for youth (NO), what about being a great place to invest in my future and a future for my future family? (NO).

But I guess if I want to retire it's gonna be a pretty decent place.

Well the birthday bash last friday was excellent, thanks to all who came out and thanks to all who purchased many libations! It was a helluva night!

Civic Election on Wednesday

Here are my thougts on the upcoming Mayoral Election, I must admit I haven't had enough time to get out and campaign which is disapointing on my part, so the best I can do today is urge all of you to get out and vote, especially if you live in the following parts of the City:

North Kildonan - Vote for my friend Jeff Browaty
St. James - Vote for my friend Scott Fielding

They are exceptional people and would bring a breath of fresh air to city council. I have to commend them for putting their names forward and seeking public office. I just wish I had the time to help them...unfortunately time has been a valuable commodity for me as of late.

One more thing, I am sure many of you have seen them, but I think they are well produced and powerful ads by the Canadian Forces, if you have a moment check them out!

Now let's talk about Studio 60!
This show gets better and better, I swear if Aaron Sorkin wrote a drama about working at McDonald's it would convince me to go back to my teenage years and work their.

Think of the drama, the Drive through girl is cheating on the crew chief with the Assistant Manager...the clock is ticking and if we don't get the big mac out in the next 60 seconds their will be hell to pay.

Anyway, I want to direct you to a new blog, a decent read and a nice addition to the realm of manitoba political blogs...so have a read if you are intersted and please disagree with him all you want!

That is about it for me tonight...time to hit the sack, but let me leave with one insiprational quote from The West Wing.

First here is something totally funny...talk about getting totally OWNED by your BOSS...I suggest you start looking for work here, if you pull this kind of stunt.

On to politics:

Let me be honest....I haven't really paid that much attention to everything that has been going on, provincially or federally.

I do know that Peter McKay has mispoken again...but I am not overly surprised. The PMO is doing an excellent job, and the libs are in turmoil with the choice of a new leader...or should I say a place holder till a real leader comes along.

The plus side with the leadership is it ensures a consistent and beneficial conservative government, despite Gilles Duceppes threats about a Christmas election.

Civic election thoughts...well none because I could really care less.

And otherwise that is it....

Oh one more thing.....
If anyone thinks that this site is just a venue to vent your frustrations or to bad mouth the Leader of the PC Party of Manitoba, you are seriously mistaken...just because I was a schulander supporter, does not mean I do not respect or support the leader, matter of fact I support the leader and his initiatives....do I agree with all of the policy decisions, no...but he has a position, and the nice thing about our party is we don't have to be sheep and conform we can actually express individual positions...so think before you vent for no reason...I don't condone it.

Moved on once again, I am now at Standard Radio (HOT 103 and QX 104 FM), blogging these days has been extremely difficult as I have not had the time I once had to envelop myself in this game of cat and mouse and who's who on the internet.

If their is one thing I can say about the blog world is that, I have a tremendous amount of respect for those who sign a name to a claim, and very litte for those who hide behind a pseudonym.

Either way, I will make random attempts to keep this thing current, but I can't make any promises.

It's back and better than ever

Two things to weigh in on this week. The first being the PC Manitoba Leader Hugh McFadyen's, support of the Tuition Freeze...while it was a surprise it really wasn't a surprise to me...however what was surprising (i don't know how many more times I can say that), was the fact that he didn't really put forward a plan to address the financial short-comings that the tuition freeze has created...

So really, I guess the Universities will just continue to raise ancilliary fees and make the whole Tuition Freeze Initiative a mute point! Well played...

The Second is the Premiers attack against outgoing MLA Stuart Murray, I would like to introduce Premier Doer (Pot) to my friend Kettle (let's call him black). Now maybe someone can correct me but I do not recall the Premier going after Mary Anne Mihychuk when she decided to resign and run for Mayor of the City? Or was that not considered personal gain???

Just another manic monday....have you seen my stapler

You know what the worst part about Monday's is....everything!
The coffee was cold in the office today, i left beef jerky in my car and now it smells like jalapeno and dead cow, and I am tired.

Anyway....the day is now over so I can head off to the fun job for discounts and hopefully grab a bite on the way.

Not too surprised to see that the MLA for Carman Mr. Denis Rocan is being challenged...rumours had been circulating but I wasn't about to weigh in on that debate, I wish him well and hope things work out in Carman.

It's good to see that the PC Party of Manitoba is developing the competitive spirit, because really once we are competitive as a party we will have that needed piece of energy to put ourselves over the top.

So I missed the fringe festival again (damn it)
but I am going to folklorama which is fun too, great food excellent entertainment what more can you ask for.

Otherwise that is my monday...i wish it was Sunday!

Convention Centre drops Oktoberfest

AFTER 27 years of steins and sausages, the Winnipeg Convention Centre decided to end its annual Oktoberfest celebration, noting a decline in popularity as the cause of its demise.

"There's only a certain amount of time that an event continues on," Doug Achorn, assistant general manager of the center, said.

"We've been doing it for an number of years and we just felt it was time to discontinue it because of the subdued lack of interest and attendance."

But don't put your lederhosen away yet. The German Society of Winnipeg contacted the Convention Centre and will now host the event from Oct. 12-14, a member of the executive said. Details are still being arranged.

Achorn did not have the attendance numbers available but could say with certainty that the attendance for the seven day festival had been declining over the years.

Still, "it had a pretty good run. But over the years times change and people's interests change."

Three years ago the centre started hosting and promoting its Mardi Gras party held in February. Attendance has been about 4,500 people over two days.

First of all it's an Aaron Sorkin show, so you already know the writing will be top quality. Second of all it has Bradley Whitford, Matthew Perry and Amanda Peet, not a bad headlining cast.

Personally I have high hopes for this show only that it will remind me more of sports night and not so much "The West Wing" however with Sorkin's style of writing and quick wit you will be sure to see many (American President, West Wing and Sports Night esque) commentary and word play through the show.

So set your dials and programs your VCR's (do they still make those) for September 18th, 10/9C.

Conor's Prediction:
Emmy Winning Hit Series that will join my ever growing DVD collection. It will sit amongst the ranks of Scrubs, Arrested Development, Sports Night, The West Wing seasons 1 through 6 and all four Seasons of 24...

Garbage Posting

So I was really enjoying alot of the content on Comments Closed...and I still am. Like any blog that I find I like to read through the history of the blogger and see where his/her headspace is at. Like I said for the most part I really enjoy reading his/her comments...whether they are true or not it's just another place with theory's that I think is worth reading.

That is why I was really disapointed with a post found from earlier this month. Whether or not you agree or disagree with my views regarding the MMF election or my support for MLA Ron Schuler, personal attacks and comparison's such as these only serve to anger, frusterate and tear apart our party from the inside.

I like many of our Schuler supporters, fought the fight and lost but in the end we realize the importance of unity within our party...petty personal attacks only add fuel to a fire that should have went out a long time ago.

So maybe comments closed show grow up a little and encourage rallying by all Manitoba PC's rather than attack those that got involved with the process and are now working to keep the party unified and strong.

Well it's Monday, and I think the AC was on the lamb in the office today because despite wearing my linen suit it was still pretty hot.

I took a walk down to our printer today to pick up a proof of a new publication I am developing...I must say it looks pretty good. However, it was my travels to the printer that were slightly disappointing. For one I walked by our new library and to my dismay the city has decided to do nothing with adjacent park, it's filthy, the wading pool or fountain hasn't been upgraded and their is graffiti on the site as well. Most disappointing. Here we are in a possible heat wave and this new beautiful glass facade is overshadowed by a dirty uninviting abandoned park.

The weekend was pretty good...had a wedding, baptism and a Ukrainian wedding...needless to say Monday was pretty tiresome.

As for politics, needless to say I don't think I need to say what has already been said. However I would like to give the big ole h/t to Dan Lett for his recent piece on anonymity...hitting the nail on the head.

I think he reads my blog...but then again I may not be engaging enough lmao.

And I was linked on comments closed...I get a kick out of this guy or girl...even though they call me the MMF Flunky (which is kind of funny I guess).

Anyway, I think I need a cold shower, dip in the pool or maybe even just a cold beer...I am off to find a patio and enjoy the rest of my evening...try to stay cool!

France is going to win the World Cup and regain their 1998 World Cup Champions title (that being said, don't expect to see me down on Corydon for a while, at least until after sunday)

This new Free Press article shows some promising results for the PC Party of Manitoba, I would just like to say again that the timing is right, the party is energized (not with spirited energy mind you). If we do not achieve government, if we do not achieve a minority situation then we really have to re-evaulate ourselves.

However, I have said it before and I will say it again the climate for change is here and with our new leader this can be accomplished.

My recent debate with the hack has shown me that even I can loose objectivity...yes it is true...I too am human and at times I do fail to see the forrest through the trees.

While I invariably disagree with his final assessment that the President won the election on the MMF's dime, I do believe that his arguements are legitimate points. However as the MMF evolves within it's electoral process I readily believe that things will change if you look back at the evolution of their elections you will see that they have come a long way in a very short time.

I do believe however that the MMF has one of the most progressive electoral processeses out of any other aboriginal group in Manitoba. A little over a year ago the MKO passed a resolution to adopt a system similar to ours in electing their grand chief...I know they are still working on it and kudos to them.

Back to my initial point, I do believe however that while things did take place that the hack has identified as wrong...I don't believe that either of these things played into the strong win that the President garnered...did they help boost numbers, I would be lying if I said no....however did they secure the Win...I don't believe they played that much of a factor.

Monday Rants and Raves

Firstly, congratulations to my good friends Theresa Vandean and David Danyluk who celebrated their wedding this past long weekend in Gimli. It was a beautiful time and I was happy that I could be an invited guest to share in the celebration with your friends and family.

Saw a lot of great people I haven't seen in a while, excellent times.

Moving right along,

My good friend the Hack decided over the weekend to begin posting again...all I can say is it's nice to see him back. I know blogging over the summer can be difficult with distractions like the outdoors so it's good to see him posting.

However, I think his comments about the abuse of incumbancy are wrong and his evaluation of the process is skewed based on the lack of balance with respect to bloggers who did not support President Chartrand, so he should possibly get all the facts before he takes the advice from people like Clare Pieuk and Derryl Sanderson.

If he has reviewed the track record of the MMF, from the early nineties till now, if he had done his research he would have seen startling change between the presidencies of Yvon Dumont and Bill Jo Delaronde, he would have seen that under President Chartrand their has been progressive and beneficial change for the Metis People.

What I know is that the concept for the AHRDA promotion began long before a CEO was selected, or the chance of an election being called was probable. Having been privy to all information I know for a fact that this concept was geared for a different reach, the agreement was signed and promotion of opportunities was essential.

Why should politics stop the promotion of opportunities to build capacity...the simple answer is it shouldn't. Would Gary Doer stop the construction of a hospital because the election was called....NO, would Stephen Harper halt necessary military spending and support because we were on the eve of an election...short answer NO.

Would any federal department stop promoting education and training programs because an election is taking place....NO

So for my friend the Hack....he is right on one point...it is time our party started reaching out to groups like the MMF...we need support. Some other critics have spoken to me and said this endorsement will divide the party....however no one complained when Gary Doer broke a promise to the Metis People and our MLA's invited the MMF to sit in the Gallery during question period as they grilled the government on Metis Rights.

I would say our Party endorsed the Metis People a long time ago by supporting them in the house.

To move on, I wanted to take a minute to respond to Mr. Sanderson...simply to update him on my status with the PC Party of Manitoba. I haven't been the Youth President for over two years, I hold no position on the board. (just thought I would clear that up and help you get your facts straight).

I also know he has taken exception to me not responding to his blog and comments about me....personally I have no time, if i was to respond to every comment made about my blogsite, or my personal opinion I wouldn't have time to work. But I guess if I didn't work I would have time.

This is a disgrace and an embarrasment

The reason we can continue to celebrate our solidarity and our freedom's is because of the sacrifices of our Veterans. I have said this many times and I will say it again, while we set aside a half-day every year to pay tribute to our veterans...everday is remembrance day, this action alone show's the ignorance of many about the sacrifices our veterans have made.

Drunk or not I am disgusted that anyone would think an action like this would be funny. People who perform actions like this should be taken outside of centre block and be hung...I swear their is nothing humourous, cool or impressive about such a disgusting afront to our Canadian Veterans.

Let me give you an example of the tribute and respect that is now paid to the veterans in the united states. I visted the Iwo Jima Memorial, The Vietnam Memorial, the Korea War Memorial.

Their is a steady flow of people, laying flags, wreaths, flowers....the area's are monitored 24 hours a day, smoking is not permitted, littering is not permitted....

maybe we need to begin to exercise this kind of due-dilligence.

You don't need a response from the Leader of the PC Party of Manitoba

Let me clairfy something for Derryl, you received a response from Michelle Bailey (Director of Communications for the Leader). You aren't entitled to any further response...for this simple reason.

They didn't represent the party, whether or not they are referred to as Progressive Conservative MLA's they didn't represent the Party. If the Party were to have endorsed the President it would have been PC Manitoba Leader Hugh McFadyen, with his caucus at 23 Kennedy....not 5 MLA's who on their own accord chose to do the right thing.

Now moving on....

Today is election day and I hope everyone is able to make it out and vote and support my friend President David Chartrand in his re-election.

Time to respond

While I usually do not waste time responding to the antics of certain bloggers, I felt the need to make an exception today after reading Mr. Derryl Sanderson's blog.

He has views and opinions regarding the current MMF election (views and opinions which I of course respect, but I do not agree with).

He critisizes the actions of 5 people whom I consider colleagues and friends, for choosing to endorse President Chartrand, as a sound and accomplished Leader for the Metis People. Derryl who claims to have a political pulse identifies this as back scratching by the MLA's because of the Metis People's voluntary involvement in the PC Leadership Election, what Derryl either chooses to ignore or fails to understand is that a Provincial MLA has a responsibility to the Province first and the party second. If he had attended the announcement it was made abundently clear that they were speaking as individual MLA's and not as a party...if it was a party endorsement things would have been different.

It is however nice to see that the MLA's (none of which supported Mr. Schuler, by the way) unified and realized that the direction of the MMF needs to be sustained so they may continue to achieve greatness for all Metis People in Manitoba, as the future government in waiting they need to keep the pulse of all levels of government.

I applaud the MLA's for doing the right thing, Denis Rocan who is a member of the MMF has been a strong supporter of the President's for a long time why wouldn't he endorse someone he considers a friend, it is his right.

If the Metis ended Ron's chances (as Derryl claims) why would Ron even want to endorse at all?

The answer is simple, President Chartrand is a solid and competent Leader with a proven track record...under his leadership and through the effort of countless dedicated Metis People and the Board of the MMF, that we as Metis People are proud to say we own our building, our Land Claims are being heard...we have countless opportunities for training and personel development.

I like the re-branding...alright I said it...but please hold your applause.

I don't necessarily like everything about it, but it has something, what exactly I haven't been able to put my finger on it yet, but I think it's a step in the right direction...kind of.

It is true...Manitoba has limitless possibilities, Manitoba has been innovative, Manitoba could be (as it should be) a mecca for small business. If anything this ad goes to show the potential of the provine and further it reminds us of the lack of vision the doer government has. Sure some of his token people were involved with the branding but I highly doubt anything creative came from them.

My only real complaint about the entire re-branding is some of the visuals...it's primarily based in the City of Winnipeg...what about Brandon, what about the expansive prairies (showing the wind farms doesn't count either...or an empty field).

So the ad kind of makes me think it's a great ad for Winnipeg...as well I don't like the font..I think it's crap.

Tories would fund lunch rooms, MLA says

THE provincial Tories might provide money to build school lunch rooms and cafeterias to encourage healthy eating, if they form the next government, Turtle Mountain MLA Cliff Cullen has said.

"If we're really short of these facilities, maybe it's something we should look at. Maybe the province should come to the table and pay for some of those facilities," Cullen said in an interview.

His party's healthy living critic, Cullen said some MLAs have sent out form letters to school divisions in their ridings.

The letters point out that Healthy Living Minister Theresa Oswald's Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures task force wants schools to have written nutrition policies and guidelines by next year.

But the letter also points out that the Public Schools Finance Board will not provide capital funding for lunch rooms and cafeterias, unless they are part of a multi-purpose room or a vocational area.

Many high schools already have cafeterias, but divisions must pay for them out of local property taxes.

The letter notes: "The Manitoba Progressive Conservative caucus is aware that the potential lack of funding to school lunch rooms may pose challenges for the development of written nutritional policies."

"We haven't had much feedback," Cullen said. "We're starting consultation -- we want to see how big of an issue it is."

Cullen said he did not know how many MLAs have sent out the form letter.

Pembina Trails School Division superintendent Paul Moreau said his trustees received the letter last month from Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen (Whyte Ridge) and Charleswood MLA Myrna Driedger.

However, a senior aide to McFadyen said the Tory leader had no recollection of writing the letter.

Cullen said staff members may have simply sent the letter out on the MLAs' behalf.

Moreau said a school board committee will study the Tories' request.

"They were really seeking feedback," Moreau said. "It raises the question, should we as a province be considering financial support? They were really expressing an interest: Would the schools be open to support?"

Cullen said it would be difficult to have a one-size-fits-all policy.

Some schools may want a lunch room where kids can eat bag lunches from home, some may want a canteen with some healthy choices and some may want a full cafeteria, he said.

The Tories have not developed a policy on what to do about school vending machines with pop and junk food, and they do not have a policy on what kinds of foods schools would be allowed to offer in cafeterias, Cullen said.

I don't get it...did a letter go out or did it not? I was at the Brandon Policy Convention/AGM two years ago and I do not remember a discussion about funding lunchrooms...nor do I remember seeing it in the policy book and after speaking with a few people I don't seem to remember seeing it at all...

I thought we wanted to get back to our grassroots, I thought we wanted to rebuild the party from the ground up....I thought we wanted member driven policy?

Can someone correct me if I am wrong.

Five MLAs endorse Chartrand's reelection bid

Five Tory MLAs have endorsed David Chartrand in his bid for a fourth consecutive term as president of the Manitoba Metis Federation in the June 29 vote.

Denis Rocan, Jack Reimer, Ron Schuler, Jack Penner and David Faurschou believe that Chartrand's previous nine years in office make him worthy of another term.

Schuler said the endorsement is not on behalf of the party or the caucus.

"Each of us are elected as individuals and we think Chartrand has done a fantastic job," Schuler said. "We think it is healthy for the people of Manitoba that the Metis should have strong leadership."

Rocan, who is one of about 40,000 Metis in the province eligible to vote, said he supports Chartrand because of the work he has done for the Metis people of Manitoba over the past nine years.

"I am a proud Metis and I happen to be the MLA for Carman," Rocan said. "I have every right to vote for Chartrand and to endorse his candidacy."

Advance polls were held yesterday and are open today at the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre on Robinson Street. Chartrand's only opponent is Yvon Dumont who won three elections as president of the MMF from 1984-to-1993 and also served as Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba from 1999-to-2003.

Chartrand said he was surprised to hear of the endorsement yesterday.

"I think it is excellent that mainstream politicians have shown interest and support in the MMF elections," Chartrand said.

So, for the last while when I take my normal drive into the office I have seen these billboards that say “Can you feel it”, but I had no idea what it was for. I actually thought it was for some new sitcom or reality TV show on CityTv.

Really, I did. The billboards were young and hip looking and upbeat, not once did I think it was for the promotion of our Province.

Then I turned the TV on the other evening and saw a commercial, asking “Can you feel it?” and I asked myself “feel what”, that burning sensation, the ache in my back…my sun burnt face…what am I feeling?

Then the light bulb went off….ahh “Manitoba”, I personally don’t think it’s effective…however myself and hundreds of others are talking about Manitoba…so maybe it is a success…however I don’t think so, the message is too hidden.

Good Monday morning to you!

Well I had an exciting weekend….well maybe not so much exciting as it was just plain old fun. I spent the weekend up in Gimli sailing with the Sea Cadets program…I wouldn’t call myself an avid sailor, but I do enjoy it. I took lesson’s last summer and I have been hooked on it ever since.

Speaking of sailing I am in the market for a sailboat…just a fun small dingy or even something a little bigger…so if you see something let me know.

I pretty much spent the day helping the Sail Centre staff launch the power boats, did my SCOP Module 4 training on the power boat and drove around all day Sunday…turns out I forgot to wear sunscreen on Saturday so I am pretty burnt and my hair bleached out and I have a killer sunglasses tan…talk about fun.

*Needless to say I am pretty much a laughing stock at the office right now

Moving right along, I saw a great story in the Winnipeg Free Press today pertaining to the MMF election, it’s too bad they didn’t get into the nuts and bolts of the campaign, but from what I have heard Candidate Dumont has only attended one candidates forum…you know decisions are made by those who show…and I really don’t know how you can expect people to vote for you if you don’t show up and let them ask you questions in a public forum.

But what would I know about politics and campaigning right?

Otherwise I thought Dan Lett wrote a great balanced article and it’s nice to see that there is some interest in Metis Politics from the main stream.

Speaking of main stream, I also want to welcome my friend Dan Lett to the blogging world, he along with the likes of Curtis Brown over at Endless Spin, The Hack at Hacks and Wonks and even those Left Wing Blackberry Addicts bring some great flavour to the Manitoba Blogging world.

What a weekend.....and Highway Pollution

Ok so I am officially exhausted.

My body clearly isn't made to handle the fun time I had on Saturday Night at my friend Ben's Wedding Social.

Thanks to everyone who helped out.

As for Highway Pollution....maybe it was the hungover state I was in yesterday but I took sometime to notice all the bright colours that adorn our beautiful stretches of bumpy concrete we call our Manitoba Highway's

It looks cluttered, it looks gross and they should all come down. My good friend's Dad, spoke out about this a few years ago and the local paper made a story about it.

At the time I really didn't think it was a big deal. However now that I look at it and see how their are so many signs along the Highway I have realized that he was right all along....they create a consistent added distraction to motorists, they clutter up the fields along the highway. It's an eyesore and should be regulated. I never really minded the one or two that used to be along the Highway, but now all I see is tight groupings of half a dozen to almost a dozen of these signs.

Bottom line, they gotta be regulated or taken down.

First day is underway

Good Morning fellow bloggers...

Well the first day has started, it's gonna be a short day as I have to catch a flight out to Edmonton for a conference on ASEP (i have a vague idea of what it is, I guess by the end I will know it inside and out).

The office is great, the people are great...I would comment on the job, however I don't have much time today to sink into it...however it seems like an exciting place and it will be challenging.

Let's talk about the weekend...

Weekend was pretty good....laid back but alright, did some grass cutting, car washing, room cleaning and Friday night drinking... (the yard and car were great...till it rained).

Let's talk politics...

Well my political radar has been turned off for a few days, but I decided to fire it up yesterday in aniticpation for something...(what exactly? I am not entirely sure)

I can see what our Prime Minister is attempting to do with the National Press Gallery. I like his concept however I fear that it could, would and did backfire. You need to allow for some freedom while maintaining control, if you want press credentials to be sought after like they are in the US then you have to give the press a reason to want them. Provide as much access to all papers as possible. If you only take the time to hit up your conservative friendly voices, those reporters and papers run the risk of becoming conservative shills...rather than credible sources....field some negative press...it will prove balance in the media and balance from your office....after all good communications is all about developing balance afterall.

Ok, gotta go have a good week...blogging may be slim for the next while but we will see how the week unfolds.

Good morning!!

Well, I have new and exciting news in my world as I am sure many of you care.

This friday is going to be my last day at the Manitoba Metis Federation as their Communications Coordinator. It's hard to believe that it has been over a year, it seems longer...I would have to chalk that up to the amount of experience, connections, friends and historical events that have taken place over the last year and a bit.

It was a hard decision to accept the new position, but I believe that it is because of the skills and guidance that I have received at the MMF that made me competitive for this position.

And just so I give everyone all the facts, I have accepted a new position at the Wuskwatim and Keeyask Training Consortium as their Communications Coordinator. They are a great group of people and I look forward to learning from them and sharing my experiences with them as well.

Lower University Tuition...but let's leave student union fee's where they are...

Any economist will tell you that if you keep the price for services down it will benefit the consumer (in the short run). However, if you fail to increase costs to meet the demand then the consumer will suffer.

I was listening to this on CJOB this AM and while I support what UMSU is doing (in theory) I do not support their attack against the U of M.

I understand the concept for a tuition freeze, education isn't cheap and in today's society when we are pushed to receive a BA (because we won't get anywhere in life without it), we as student's seek every available opportunity to pay for school.

In comes Gary Doer on a white stallion offering a chance for our humble students to go to school. Unfortunately the cheap education has made university popular and the enrolment has affected the way Universities offer their services...courses, counselling, you name it the school's cannot meet the demand.

So I guess the simple solution would be to hire more profs and support staff. Unfortunately the revenues generated by tuition (among other things) isn't their to assist with off-setting the increase in student enrolment. Therefore the student's suffer because of cheap education.

What is the solution?
-Increase ancilliary fees
-Include a flat rate on labs and other applicable courses

The probelm?
-Increased cost for students

Since the government has hogtied the hands of the Universities they can't touch tuition so they need to use creative accounting.

But it isn't the U of M's fault, the provincial government is killing our post-secondary education in Manitoba and is backing our school's into a corner.

So attack the government, not the Universities...afterall they are just trying to stay afloat.

But let's also look at costs, student's are also forced to pay student union fee's, how necessary is it that a student pays anywhere from $200.00 to $600.00 a year and for what?

At the U of M they have a student population of over 25,000 less than 1,000 poeple come out and vote...if you polled the majority of the U of M student's they wouldn't even know who the UMSU President is.

The U of W is no different, the majority of the student's do not get involved.

Maybe the student unions should also look at their spending and see if they can give the student's a break in costs as well.

Okay...so I will admit it.

I really haven't been posting much lately.

I will be honest.

The Leadership Campaign deflated me and, it's taken me sometime to get back on my feet and bring things back to normal...or at least as close to normal as possible (which I guess really isn't normal for me at all).

However, I am back and I am going to continue with this experiment we call blogging.

As well, I am going to turn the comments back on and get things going.

So here are some observations of mine over the last few weeks:

Hugh McFadyen:
So far so good...even with Blackberry Addicts taking a shot. The Media have definetly been much kinder to our new Leader than our Leader past.

Like I have said before and I will say it again. All the winning conditions are in place for the PC Party of Manitoba to be the next Government.

Crocus:
Hats off to my friend Curtis Brown and his little piece of satire...love it

Everything else:
Trying the expand my media consulting business, it's a slow start but soon enough it will grow...or I will shut it down and latch on to another one.....or maybe I will just jump into broadcasting and the mainstream media...who knows.

From Stu to Hugh...Congratulations

It's taken me a couple of days to put together my thoughts for this post. The last 8 weeks have been hard fought, lack of sleep, lack of eating, lack of a social life caused me to live in my own bubble. So for these last few days I have taken the time to reconnect with my friends, with people whom I haven't had the time to see or speak with regularly. But more importantly I have taken some time to reflect on the events of this past weekend.

And, while I am disappointed that my candidate did not win, I am please in knowing that our Party has been re-energized, that our party is still unified and that we will now come together under our new Leader, Mr. Hugh McFadyen and defeat Gary Doer and the NDP.

That Hugh McFadyen will be the next Premier of Manitoba.

In reflection, I believe that while we didn't win many of our policies were sound, common sense initiatives that would benefit our party.

Leadership reviews should be mandatory, terms limits are essential for the Premiers of this Province and policy driven by the membership is essential for grassroots renewal and participation.

I am cautiously optimistic about the next few months, however only time will tell with our new leader, and I ask the many supporters of my friend and candidate Ron Schuler and Mr. Ken Waddell to put your partisan thoughts aside and let all of us rally behind our new Leader Hugh McFadyen and move forward.

Somedays I feel like I am at Hyde's Park

So, ok...the blogosphere isn't really like speakers cornor in hyde park, however it is very simlar...except you don't have mass riots and police action to silence you....or...well...umm...maybe they do.

Anyway, just got in from a great day and great Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Luncheon and all it cost me was one parking ticket (which is still cheaper than the new speeding fines).

I haven't seen Prime Minister Harper speak since the election and I found that even in the short time between the election till now, he looks even more confident than he did during the election.

Had an opportunity to see a lot friends and people who I haven't spoken with in a while, what an excellent afternoon.

Hey,

Just to make some things crystal clear, I am a loyal and devout supporter of my good friend Ron Schuler. I truly believe that he has the energy, strength and skill to take our Party to Government. He understands that our base needs to be re-energized and that we as a party need to be competitive amongst ourselves so we can take our party to government.

What I do need to make clear is, that in my professional capacity I do work for the Manitoba Metis Federation as a Communications Staffer, my support however is not or will ever be an indication of the support of the Federation for any PC Leadership Candidate.

That decision is ultimately left up to the elected politicians whom I have the utmost respect for, they were elected by the Metis People to represent them on a political level.

Personally I support my good friend Ron Schuler.

However I am pleased to see that their are so many different cultural groups taking an interest in the PC Leadership race, it will be their input and involvement that will truly shape our party and make it a better party for all of Manitobans.

Well first off let's talk about my Candidate Ron Schuler...this guy has been from one end of the Province to the other...first weekend in April he was out at the MMF Celebrations, sharing in their preparation for the Land Claims trial and he was even out at the Monday morning procession to the law courts, also he came to listen to President Chartrand testify on the Wednesday.

Tomorrow night is a candidates Forum in Russell...come out and watch Ron hit another one out of the park as he keeps running with our momentum.

This race has been really exciting and our party has grown because of the renewed spirit that Ron brings to it.

Great to see him all over our Province.

Brandon Dinner....Huge Success

First and Foremost...I am going to forget about the leadership candidates for the momement (gasp), and thank, congratulate and tip my hat to my good friends Will Goodon and Kelly Saunders.

They served as the Co-Chair's to the dinner and it was by far one of the best Brandon Fundraising Dinners I have been to in a long, long time.

Great food, Great People, Great Prizes, Great Atmosphere...well done Will and Kelly.

Back to Leadership. Rather than jump up on a pedestal and promote who I believed delivered one of the best speeches (Mr. Schuler, I am leaning in your direction). Kind of wondering what everyone else thinks and we will take it from their.

It's been a while

Hey, guess what?

I am still alive kicking, screaming and let's not forget breathing.

I finally have an opportunity to come up for air and see how refreshing it is to know that my candidate, our party's candidate, Ron Schuler has a plan to revitalize our Province with a sound concrete plan to Strengthen our Economy. The status-quo just isn't good enough for Manitoba and Ron's plan is one of the best things I have seen in a long, long time.

On another note I have heard from a very reliable source that Mr. Denis Rocan, MLA for Carman is still in the race and he will announce tomorrow, if I am wrong then drinks are on me at the Spring Dinner lol.

One other thing worth mentioning is that I think I will be in bed before midnight tonight and I might be well on my way to getting maybe 7 hours of sleep versus the 4 to 5 I have been accomplishing....either way it has totally been worth it and I look forward to the next 6 weeks of our campaign.

You know this campaign reminds me of scenes from great political drama's like the West Wing, however I now have a real appreciation for the late nights and early mornings that their characters portray on the show. While they do glamorize it, I now truly understand it lol.

I guess to wrap things up before I head out is that, it is truly an honour to be part of something great, and the weeks ahead are only going to get better.

Pallister is Out! Bring on Schuler!!!

I am sure many of you have heard the news, Brian Pallister has decided that it would be in his best interests to continue his service as a Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar. Their is no denying that for anyone vying for the coveted spot as Leader of the PC Party of Manitoba, that Brian would have been a formidable opponent.

I have to applaud Brian for making , what was possibly, a very difficult decision.

However, it is disturbing that so far almost everyone who was listed as a viable Leadership Candidate has pulled their name out of the running...it almost makes you wonder if this is the job that no one wants?

However, I beg to differ, because Brian would have been such a formidable opponent may have scared a few people off...then again I could be way off base with this one. All I know is we have the possibility of having Hugh McFadyen, Ron Schuler and David Langtry....maybe a few more will come out of the woodwork?

If it does, in the end, come down to a two horse race...my money is on a McFadyen and Schuler contest...it should prove to be exciting.

I am also hearing some rumblings about returning this leadership bid to a delegated convention...I wonder if this is true?

Bruinooge Parliamentary Secretary and Langtry for Leader

Firstly congrats to Rod on his new appointment as PS to INAC and OFI. Rod is a pretty impressive guy and will do an excellent job. Aboriginal Politics and the inner workings come with a big learning curve, but I believe both and and Minister Prentice will have no problem tackling that curve...barring they find some strong advisors from Metis, FN and Inuit communities.

And what is this! David Langtry is considering a run for leader of the PC Party fo Manitoba hmmm...let me know what you think.

And on one other note, I received a phone call yesterday to participate in a meeting at 11am in Stonewall with MP Brian Pallister as he is considering a return to Provincial Politcs...however I am swamped at the office and can't make it...if anyone out their went today let me know what shakes loose.

Well here I am on bended knee seeking forgiveness...for alas I forgot to mention the Brandon Sun...hopefully they forgive me. In my experience in dealing with the Brandon Sun, I have found it to be a pleasant one and I enjoy working with them on rural and city stories. (Don't take this as sucking up...only stating a fact).

Each paper has given McFadyen and Schuler a fair shake...and it seems that McFadyen and Schuler have excellent media skills and have developed a positive working environment with each paper...they don't work against them, they work with them to develop their stories.

However no one has declared yet, I know everyone is testing the waters...but it appears that it might be McFadyen, Schuler, Pallister and Driedger who's names go forward...if that is the case I say it's a good mix and will make for an excellent leadership convention.....

Only time will tell.

Ok so like most people here all we were waiting for was the other shoe to drop, and it has with a resounding thud (Pallister is testing the waters, McFadyen is weighing in).

I like Pallister, he is a good bright guy, apparently the editorial board at the Winnipeg Free Press has a different take on Mr. Pallister. So if he is elected Leader of the party is going to be another hate hate relationship with the Provincial Tories and the Winnipeg Free Press? What we really need and I hate using this word is a "media darling".

So who is the "Media Darling" going to be? McFadyen or Schuler?

McFadyen and Schuler are both well liked by the Editorial Boards of each major paper, they are young successful so I am thinking the race might come down to them..unless someone else throws their name in the ring. That being said, if it is a 3 way race, it should be a good one with the horse race being McFadyen and Schuler.

This takes me to my next point:

So far everyone is testing the waters, dipping the old big toe in to see what it's like, in Manitoba we don't have time for hedging our bets. Membership cut-off is the 15th of March for New Members and the 30th of March for renewals. The first leadership vote is the 29th of April, we need some strong contendors now who are at the forefront...hopefully we will get it soon.

John Loewen confirmed he won't run for the PC Leadership...however I think we knew that when Mr. Loewen made a decision to run for the Liberals.

However now it begs the question, if he told CJOB he is pondering another political move...what is it?

My only guess is the Council or maybe even Mayor of the City of Winnipeg. John definetly has the connections, the profile and the experience to serve in either of these roles.

Well what a day, what a day indeed!

I am finally getting home from an amazing rally today in Winnipeg for the Conservative Party. Let's just say that their was so much energy in the room we could power the entire city of Winnipeg....literally.

Their was over 1000 people in attendance it was packed with people of all ages, and I had the opportunity to go on stage and hold my candidates sign proudly in support of James Bezan and the Conservative Party of Canada.

Great Day! Amazing Day! Let's hope the energy continues into tomorrow and my good friends who are candidates are successful.

Okay so the debate is pretty much wrapped up, James, Tom and Duncan were excellent…however I am disappointed with Arrogant Ed, rude to callers, rude to Richard and rude to the other candidates…definitely not the mark of a statesmen or former Premier.

It’s clear that Ed has had his time in the sun, he is stuck in the past and it’s time to move forward.

Let me get this straight. CAW Leader Buzz Hargrove will endorse the Liberal Party of Canada everywhere except quebec. Ummmmmm.....yeah, that is like Michael Sheps (Hair Transplant Clinic) wearing a toupee and says his treatment works.

First of all, if the PM truly doesn't support the Separatist Movement, why would he continue to accept the endorsement of Buzz Hargrove? Maybe Buzz realizes that the Libs are going to loose ground rather than gain it in Quebec.

I guess the Canda that Paul wants us to choose is a divided one rather than a unified one.

It's bizarre really it's like saying the Libs are great everywhere else except in Quebec...odd, I guess we just have to chalk it up to another boon-doggle for the Liberals in this campaign.

While I am here, I might as well comment on the plateau in the polls, I have to agree with Warren on this one. A mild shift or plateau as some papers are calling it don't translate into 70 seats, it's a sampe of 500 with a margin that is wider than a four lane highway.

However the peverbial Cat isn't in the bag until the polls close on January 23, 2006.

Genius, Cheap, or just plain Deceitful?

So here is the new campaign plan out in Selkirk-Interlake. We have a candidate who is 70, so let’s run a younger photo. Not a bad plan, most politicians usually use one that is 2 to 3 years younger then what they really are. After all, we know that politics can age you dramatically in a short period of time. Although I think there is a statute of limitations that comes with a strategy like that, I said 2 or 3 years, not 20 or 30!

In comes the NDP, recycling signs from the 70’s that bear a campaign slogan and image of a young vibrant Ed Schreyer. You know, the one my neighbors and friends of my parents voted for then. So this strategy begs the question, is it genius, cheap or deceitful?

Well judging by the amount of signs and half-page ads they are running in the Selkirk Journal it’s clear that they do not have financial worries at the Schreyer campaign. So let’s rule out Cheap.

Deceitful:

I would boarder on the yes side of things with this answer but not entirely deceitful, it is definitely mischievous and Machiavellian but not entirely over-the-top. For those of the electorate who are either new to Manitoba or not politico’s like myself they may not be entirely aware of who Mr. Schreyer is and assume that this candidate looks like a well-seasoned politician (which is the case). It could lead voters to think that he is young, energetic, vibrant and new to politics (which isn't the case). Of course they are mistaken. Mr. Schreyer has done it all and seen it all and has led a political life that has been similar to Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor James Bartleman.

While shaving 2 or 3 years isn't a bad thing, 20 or 30 is like asking the electorate to get blood from a stone. This way to attract voters by presuming he is young and vibrant, when he is not is definetly like nixon inviting democrats to a fundraiser for the republicans with the belief that it is for a democratic cause.

It's not the truth! And I thought Mr. Schreyer was about cleaning up politics and ending the spin and lies? I guess not.

Genius:

Definitely not genius, they extended the expiry date on these signs, it’s definitely past due and like the soured milk in the fridge, should go out with the Bathwater. I think this sign reminds of his commitment as a public servant but moreover that he has been there, done that, he has the t-shirt and has been our Head-of-State. I think this sign reminds a lot of voters of his age and past-commitments and that he should do like many other people and enjoy his retirement, we all agree that he has earned it and served this country well.

My overall opinion is this strategy may backfire, it’s not reinforcing on what they are trying to sell but what they are trying to hide and runaway from. It’s an interesting concept and I commend them on taking a shot in the dark, but like I said 2 to 3 years for a photo, not 20 or 30.

I am hearing this rumour that the MLA for Rossmere Harry Schellenberg is contemplating retirement. Now this is only something I picked up while out for drinks one evening with friends who don't tow the conservative line, but I thought it might be worth tossing up.

If this is true what does it mean for Terry Duguild? Well if Terry loses his campaign this time around I guess their will be another possible opportunity for him to run for public office...maybe doer would even give him a cabinet position.

But hey this is all speculation, what do I know I am just a guy with a web blog.

This is what really pisses me off!!

Campaign Office and Sign Vandalism!! First of all, what if anything do you expect to accomplish by destroying a sign, egging an office or defacing campaign related items?

NOTHING!!!!

So why do you do it? Because it’s rebellious?, you’re making a political statement?, you don’t believe in that party’s platform?

How about this…because you and your little friends are COWARDS and CHILDREN!

There is something honourable about making a choice to enter public service, albeit the hidden ambition is power, as a candidate they have chosen to enter a world of scrutiny by the all Seeing Eye we call the media and public opinion.

But, when people choose to use personal attacks and vandalism to convey a message then they are no different then the people who choose not to vote but sit in a coffee shop and bitch about the issues. Who in reality should vote so they have a right to speak, if you don’t vote you should shut your mouth and accept the hand that has been dealt to you, because you failed to participate in this exercise we call democracy. They say there is a democratic deficit in our society today. I agree with that statement except the apathetic choose to complain, bitch and moan but are never proactive in democratic reform therefore they only propagate the situation.

Back to sign vandalism. If you are an NDP and vandalize a Conservative or Liberal, you are hurting that NDP candidate, if you are a Conservative and Vandalize a Liberal or NDP then you are hurting that candidate as well and if you are a Liberal (sorry to hear that)…it’s all the same.

Vandalism doesn’t garner votes, it robs them, vandalism doesn’t create awareness it creates a mob mentality and stifles freedom and adds to the already growing apathy of the Canadian Voter. If you truly don’t believe in a party’s position then vote against that candidate, don’t destroy their signs, egg their office or use graffiti, it’s childish.

You only hurt the Party you support and our Canadian Election if you throw an egg at the party you don’t support. Respect the work and the commitment each candidate has made and on January 23, 2006 get out and vote.

A Lively Debate in Selkirk Interlake

Well it's been a while since I have put up any meaningful comments. Let's be honest we have all been busy, but I hear their is a demand out their for people to know what is on my mind and if I am going to take a swing at anyone particular candidate or political party today.

Well I definetly won't disapoint!!!

Yesterday (being sunday) I attended a well-organized and might I say well-attended debate at the Selkirk Regional High School. The debate was organized by Interlake Publishing and moderated by Jim Mosher.

All the candidates with the exception of the Christian Heritage Party were in attendance and here is how the rest of the lot faired.

Conservative Party Incumbent: James Bezan

Overall cleary the winner of this debate, he focused on the Key Message for Canada but tailored his responses and focused on the issues that he has dealt with for every constituent of the Selkirk-Interlake Riding. He focused on the importance of social services that are required to keep our Rural Communities functioning, the importance of the preservation of post-offices, hospitals, access to physicians and ending Highway Medicine.

He dispelled the typical fear-mongering of Libs and Dips with respect to the small business tax cuts and drove the point home on the benefits of the reduction of the GST. Afterall 32% of Canadians do not make enough taxable income, so the only tax relief that can see is in the produce aisle at the local safeway.

Speed is something James does need to work on but I believe he has grown and become a viable and effective MP for Selkirk Interlake and has served his constituents well. Clearly he is in touch with the needs of all members of Selkirk Interlake, and it would be a benefit to have him continue his public service to this riding.

Green Party Candidate: Tom Goodman

I consider Tom a very good friend, someone who's political opinion I can trust. He did very well...his overall presentation was excellent and his key message that shined through was his commitment to the environment. I agree with it too, we need a strong, healthy and sustainable environment to pass on to our children. Afterall if we destroy it what will be left for our children and our children's children.

Independant: Duncan Geisler

I don't know Duncan, I do know that he is a lawyer and is very politically astute to the issues facing our areas. However, he is an independant and his overall presentation wasn't lackluster but kudos go out to him for getting into the race.

Liberal: Bruce Benson

The only candidate at any debate I have ever been to that has responded to heckling and jeering from the audience. Now I am not one to cause trouble (okay who's kidding I am). But I guess he didn't take to lightly to my "Beer and Popcorn" (since after the comment was made he addressed me publicaly and asked if he could continue to speak) comment when he touched on childcare, or for that matter, in my defence I wasn't the only one who reacted (to this comment), to top off his closing remarks he believes that univeristy tuition should be free (great policy..but who will pay...someone in the crowd said).

What I really loved about his presentation was his opening remarks where he pitches his book, advertises the price and tells the audience that if they would like to purchase a copy to see him after the debate.

I didn't realize the High School became a chapters and we were at a book launch ( of course I immdiately searched for the starbucks and attempted to a get a grande vanilla late half sweet with percent milk or a chapters employee to find the latest edition of Frank Magazine) to my chagrin the only thing I saw was a coffee urn with two day old coffee and a copy of MacLeans Magazine...so it begs the question is this a credible election campaign or a fundraised Liberal endorsed book tour?

Hey I was a parachute candidate once, I didn't spend any money but I door knocked got my support, was nomiated and gave people a viable option. It wasn't my fault that the candidate (Gary Doer) didn't want to debate me in an open forum, but I would have been all over it and I definetly wouldn't have responded to heckling or jeering. Afterall if a candidate can't even keep his cool at a debate, one would assume he would be a disaster in the house.

NDP: Ed Schreyer

What can I say, he had some good answers, and is definetly an expert on the state of our environment. However, I really think our former Vice-Regal/Premier/MP/MLA (i think the only thing missing is senator), should hang-up his political hat, he has been their done that and has a very impressive and respectable legacy. It would be fair to say that Mr. Schereyer has probably been the political inspiration for many young aspiring politico afficionado's.
However not to begrudge his age, Mr. Schreyer isn't a new face for democracy and I can't fathom how he can go to the back of the bus after driving it.

Change the Channel....HONK! HONK!

Well I guess the gloves have come off...well only a little. This ad isn't scathing, I wouldn't call it an attack ad, maybe more of a scratch ad, it gives a little fat lip to the libs but it doesn't gouge their eyes out.

It's strong, many good messages throughout and I love the part about changing the channel..honk honk.

What I like about the ad is that it isn't an outright attack ad, but it does focus on the negative in a positive light...somehow for me it still keeps the game clean...however I view this as more to come and uglier it may get.

I would assume if the trends remain the conservatives will take their popularity out for a ride and see how far it gets them.

I just hope they remain cautious and the wheels don't come off the wagon, hopefully they won't start suffering from stagnation in the final days...only time will tell.

Now we got ourselves a horse race YEEEHAHHH!!

The nightly tracking leading into the New Year has been anything but boring, for almost a month the conservatives hit a plateau at 29%, they couldn't break the barrier of 30%...and in a few short days we have seen a gap narrow, margins shrink.

Oh These Times they are a changing

Well I mentioned before that the gap was 6, now the gap is an amazing tie, I call it a tie because of the margins of error.

What do I credit this to? Well it would be fair to say that the gap is closing, the influence of scandal, corruption and entitlement are starting to come through. With it becoming more and more clear that the liberals weren't only involved in adscam it makes one wonder how many other fingers were in so many other pies. Now you can always pull the Chretien card, but how long can we expect this reason for corruption and start to realize that it is a truly an excuse.

These numbers are early, we still have about three weeks to go to see what each party has to offer. They are all releasing their aboriginal platforms within the next week...it will be interesting to see how issues are tackled and if the public in general will accept the platform of each party, or will they succumb to strict scrutiny. Will any other policies reveal new holes, political gaffs or missteps...what will the next three weeks bring?

This week it is Ralph Goodale, next week it could be something else? Let's keep our ears to the ground and keep talking...lets figure things out and hear what everyone has to say...but more importantly, watch the numbers, read the policy's and realize what the right decision for the country will be.

Ben Szuuts is probably one of my best friends. He and I have been through everything from going to a little town called Piney to riding in the back seat of a police car. You name it Ben and I have done it.

Yesterday I found out that he and his girlfriend of at least four years Helene got engaged. I couldn't be happier.

Last year Helene Ben and I went Florida and it was one of the best vacations I have been on in quite some time. They are two really special people to me and I want to wish them all the best.

Well the gap has narrowed to 7 points, it is clear that the CPC, who are running a very successful and organized campaign are still having trouble getting over the hump...they are really going to have to pull up boots if they want to close the margin.

The Gingerbread men are appealing taste great and they last a long-time. Hopefully like our next Government...a conservative one that is.

So I was reading Curtis Brown's blog the other day and he made a very interesting point regarding the SCO's election strategy.

Now don't get me wrong I understand why the First Nation's Peoples are running this campaign. Except I think that they should just encourage their people to vote, after all if you can prove that when the aboriginal people can influence important seats and elections...or any group for that matter then you have a significant opportunity to carry some political clout to the bargaining table for anyone.

I think if the CPC don't form a minority government good 'ole Palli will be in the running, however it gets dicey and it could be a crap shoot for him if they do form a minority..i mean Majority government and he isn't invited into the big boys circle of fun (we like to call that cabinet). Now I really wouldn't be surprised at this point if he decides to take a stab a leadership of a provincial party, but the real question is would he be accepted...or would a campaign of anyone except Pallister form?

Could a candidate simply win on "the anyone but brian bandwagon"...I would hedge my bets to say yes.

Schuler:

If Ron can get the support from his fellow caucus members he definetly has a shot, some call him the underdog, the man who would qualify this as a race...I would call him the best shot we have for a leader/premier.

he isn't more of the same old conservative rhetoric we are used to...he doesn't follow the status quo and he definetly isn't content with what we have.

McFadyen:

Another young and dynamic "new breed" of MLA that we now have in the house. Hugh has been around, he knows the ropes, has some great idea's and the women at work seem to find him visually appealing (whatever that means). Hugh is bright, energetic and ready to work hard as seen by his landslide by-election victory in Fort Whyte. I have also had the priviledge and honor to work with him on a few campaigns and his head is in the right place to maybe make the party work. But will he suffer from the same old, same old status quo...we'll see

Downey:

It's like the second coming of Ed Schreyer with the same response..."what the hell". Don't get me wrong I give credit where Credit is due, if it were not for the Leadership of Mr. Downey the PC party would still be in debt and a for sale sign would be on the front of 23 Kennedy. He was and still is a dynamic public speaker and served his province well. Definetly an asset and a political animal. My concern is that this would be a status quo leadership, it might get us one or two seats but not government. The public couldn't buy into it, like they won't buy into Ed Schreyer in Selkirk Interlake.

So Stephen Harper is in town tonight...actually he is probably here right now considering that it is 4:41pm and I am still behind my desk, wrapping things up because I am taking the next two days off for the holidays (umm I mean Christmas shopping)...I hate Christmas shopping because I never know what to buy...hence the reason for putting it off.

Anyway back to Harper...I like the guy, I really do...but Stephen you are interupting my shopping time...god I have already put it off this long and now I have to campaign like 4 days before the big day! jee whiz...can't these guys just take a break...afterall it's the spirit of the season...give me some time off.

Anyway I digress, if can make it out to the Harper Rally tonight it's at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg South (Pembina Highway). For 5:00pm....I am going to do my damndest to get down their since I am shopping at St. Vital tonight.

U.S. pundit: Canada a 'retarded cousin'

WASHINGTON (CP) - Canada has been described lately by a conservative U.S. television host as "a stalker" and a "retarded cousin."

Another pundit recently asked if Canadians weren't getting "a little too big for their britches." There's been a spate of Canada-bashing by right-wing media commentators in the United States ever since Prime Minister Paul Martin's complaints about lumber penalties and U.S. policy on climate change. His remarks prompted an unusual rebuke last week from the American ambassador.

The attacks on Canada have had web bloggers typing overtime and a non-profit group that's monitoring the trend, Media Matters for America, says it's disturbing.

Yet Paul Waldman, a senior fellow for the group, said Monday the criticism is confined to the usual faction that erupts whenever there's criticism of President George W. Bush's administration and it probably won't last past Canada's Jan. 23 election.

"There are always going to be occasions when it pops up. But Canada is never going to occupy an extraordinary amount of American thought," said Waldman.

"It's more like: 'Who can we beat on today?' It's never going to reach the heights of animosity toward France in the run-up to the Iraq war."

Last week, MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, a well-known conservative pundit, let loose with a string of anti-Canada rants.

"Anybody with any ambition at all, or intelligence, has left Canada and is now living in New York," he said.

"Canada is a sweet country. It is like your retarded cousin you see at Thanksgiving and sort of pat him on the head. You know, he's nice but you don't take him seriously. That's Canada."

Carlson also said it's pointless to tell Canada to stop criticizing the United States.

"It only eggs them on. Canada is essentially a stalker, stalking the United States, right? Canada has little pictures of us in its bedroom, right?"

"It's unrequited love between Canada and the United States. We, meanwhile, don't even know Canada's name. We pay no attention at all," he said.

The day before, Fox News host Neil Cavuto highlighted Martin's remark at a news conference that the United States is a "reticent nation" lacking a "global conscience" on climate change.

"So have the Canadians gotten a little too big for their britches?" Cavuto asked.

"Could our neighbours to the north soon be our enemies?"

Douglas MacKinnon, a press secretary to former Republican senator Bob Dole, also recently accused Canada of harbouring terrorists.

"Can Canada really be considered our friend anymore?" he asked in a recent commentary in the right-wing Washington Times newspaper.

"What other question can be asked when the Canadian government not only willingly allows Islamic terrorists into their country but does nothing to stop them from entering our nation?"

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins warned Martin last week to tone down anti-American jabs or risk hurting bilateral relations. But Martin was unrepentant, saying he would "not be dictated to" by the United States and his hard line appears to be resonating with some voters.

While the offensive from American pundits isn't widespread, it still has the potential to affect cross-border ties, said Waldman.

"On Capitol Hill, the TVs are turned to Fox News. This kind of media environment is what the White House pays attention to," he said.

"That hostility is probably shared by a lot of people in the administration."

Boost our Canadian Armed Forces

So I have a fondness for the Canadian Military.... some of you may ask why? Well the reason is simple, in our society we can choose any profession we want, we can dream of any job we want and we can apply for goddamned job we want.

So when you choose between, a safe and secure office job, or flipping burgers, answering telephones, nurse, doctor, construction worker etc...why would someone give themselves to the Canadian Armed Forces or polices services for that matter and increase their risk in the workplace.

This line of thought also applies to Paramedics, Firefighters and any other job that I didn't mention that carries a significant risk to it.

More specifically back to the Armed forces I would like to believe that their inlies a sense of duty to one's nation, to be proud of one's country and to serve this country which grants all of the above liberties and freedom's.

Thats why I like the Conservative Plan for the armed forces. It's not a matter of being a war monger or militarizing Canada, ti's about giving our men and women who have chosen to serve a real chance and while we can't keep them safe in the fields of battle we can certainly give them the best tools available to help keep them as safe as possible.

So let me get this straight, the Young Tory MLA's are credited for bringing the party's numbers up...well if you are going to give credit where credit is due, then maybe you should give it to ALL the young MLA's lets not hand pick any of them.

Firstly, Heather is excellent, young vibrant and a pretty good friend, Hugh he's a friend worked on many campaigns, but has yet to prove himself in the house. Albeit I am sure he will give an excellent performance. Cliff Cullen....I don't know him very well so I will reserve judgement. Leanne Rowat, a solid MLA, not outshining performance however, she doesn't have the media attention that the other MLA's have.

Now then we could talk about Ron Schuler - but wait he wasn't mentioned in the list, highest profile out of any of the youngest MLA's one of the safest seats in the province. Kelvin Goertzen...oh wait not mentioned either, another MLA who is frequently in the paper or on CJOB.

So why weren't all the young MLA's mentioned, without the work of ALL of them especially Schuler and Goertzen, who have been the most visible on pressing issues and being effective and strong opposition.

So I ask this questions, why isn't credit given where credit is due...to ALL the MLA's not just a few?

and I hate to say this, but I don't really think the young MLA's have a lot to do with the polling numbers, the federal election has caused the Manitoba Liberal parking garage to open it's doors and people are either going NDP or Conservative as well with Tory Leader Stuart Murray stepping down their is some new energy and cause to believe that we will do better under a new leadership.

While the young MLA's have definetly made an impact, it's an assortment of things that have caused this snap shot to go in our favour. If I was in a War Room at 23 Kennedy I would get the nightly tracking going to really determine how accurate this probe research poll truly is.

DESPITE having a lame-duck leader, the provincial Tories have pulled into a tie with the governing New Democrats in voter support, a new poll shows.

The poll was conducted by Probe Research Inc. for the Free Press from Nov. 29 to Dec. 8 -- just after a bitter public leadership challenge within the Tory party that saw party leader Stuart Murray announce he would step down from his position following a leadership convention to be held in the spring.

The poll shows the Progressive Conservatives have surpassed their June 2003 election showing of 36 per cent and now have the support of 39 per cent of provincial voters.

The NDP registered its lowest level of public support since the election, when it garnered 49 per cent of the vote. The New Democrats now have the support of 39 per cent of voters.

The Liberals jumped from 13 per cent in the last general election to 19 per cent in the poll.

The Tories are not just experiencing an increase in support in their traditional strongholds in rural Manitoba. The party is now seriously competing with the NDP in Winnipeg as well.

"Since 1999, we've been polling four times a year using identical methodology, and this is the first time the Conservatives are tied with the NDP," said Scott MacKay, president of Probe Research. "To see the numbers meet for the first time in six years is a big deal."

The poll found the Tories leading in the southwest and southeast sections of Winnipeg by four and five percentage points, respectively. In the northwest section of the city, the Tories trail the NDP by four points. The two parties are tied in northeast neighbourhoods at 41 per cent.

The only parts of the city where the NDP remains fully in control are the central and core areas.

MacKay said the internal strife within the provincial Conservative party seems to have worked in the party's favour.

He said the public turmoil and the decision to hold a leadership campaign may have brought the party new respect.

"People are seeing that they took extraordinary steps to deal with their issues," said MacKay. "It seems to have invigorated the party. Even without a leader, it seems like people are looking forward to the future."

Tory president Brent Pooles said news of the poll made his day.

He said the spike in support following Murray's announcement in no way serves as an indictment of the man who has led the party since he was acclaimed to the position in 2000.

Pooles said he suspects the numbers more likely show that voters believe the governing New Democrats are becoming tired.

He also said the Tories have some "young and vibrant" MLAs in the form of Hugh McFadyen -- who was elected in a byelection in Fort Whyte on Tuesday -- and Cliff Cullen, Heather Stefanson and Leanne Rowat, who are attracting attention and voters.

"I think people are excited about that," he said. "There is a feeling of youthful vibrancy among our party."

Pooles said he is also excited by the indication that Tory support is on the upswing in Winnipeg.

"That's very significant," he said. "The first seats we're going to try and earn back are Fort Garry and St. Norbert and Assiniboia. This gives us encouragement to do that."

MacKay said he attributes the surge in Tory support more to renewed interest in the party than to dissatisfaction with the NDP.

But, he said, the government should take a look at its strategy moving forward if it wants to reclaim its position as Manitoba's most popular party.

The next general election will be far more competitive, said MacKay.

"(The New Democrats) are going to feel the heat from this," he said. "They have to realize that the tide may have turned here. The next election will not be an instant replay."

A spokesman for the NDP said the poll needs to be taken in context. He said the survey was done just after the federal election was called and many respondents may have been reporting their federal preferences.

"A lot of people don't differentiate between federal and provincial politics," he said. "We've seen this in the past."

The spokesman said the poll won't alter the way the NDP governs the province.

"We know we have to work hard every day to earn the trust of voters," he said.

MacKay said the onus is now on the Conservatives to choose an exciting new leader to keep the momentum going.

The Probe poll was based on phone interviews with 1,003 Manitoba adults. Based on the sample size, one can say with 95 per cent certainty that the results are within 3.1 percentage points of what they would have been if the entire population of the province had been interviewed.

THE provincial Tories have set the date to elect a new leader.

Manitoba Progressive Conservatives will hold a leadership convention on April 29, 2006 in Winnipeg, the party's executive council announced yesterday.

If a second vote is necessary, it will be held May 13.

PC Leader Stuart Murray pulled the plug on his leadership on Nov. 14, but is staying on until a new leader is chosen.

Possible leadership candidates include MP Brian Pallister, MLAs Myrna Driedger and Heather Stefanson, Hugh McFadyen, the former policy adviser to Premier Gary Filmon, and former Tory MLA Jim Downey.

"I am confident we will see many qualified candidates step forward," Brent Pooles, president of the Manitoba PC party, said in a statement.

"We will emerge from this convention united in our resolve to provide the positive change that Manitobans want and deserve."

Murray's announcement that he would step down came nine days after he called for a leadership convention when he received lukewarm support from delegates at the party's annual meeting.

Murray left a job as the CEO for X gasoline when he was acclaimed Tory leader in November 2000, replacing Gary Filmon.

How the leadership vote will work is still being sorted out, but it's likely each rural riding will get at least one voting location, while Winnipeg members will be asked to vote during the leadership convention in the city.

Previously, the party used a delegate system, with up to 12 members representing each riding.

Currently the party has 12,000 members, but that number is expected to increase prior to the April vote.

We only have one life to give.

We only have one life to live.

This is what has fired me up this morning.

The Blue Line of defense, our men and women who wear a badge, a gun on their hip and drive a cruiser car, they are the last line of defense against a society controlled by chaos. They keep the peace, put to bed civil unrest, and educate the public as to the many dangers in our society.

They police our community’s and perform outreach to hopefully better the lives of those who are less fortunate than us.

More importantly they choose to use the “one life they have to give” to protect our families, our communities and us

That is why when I read in a paper, or hear on the news that someone has decided to murder a police officer, maim a police officer or the police are being scrutinized for actions, which they performed in the line of duty.

I get angry.

I realize that these courageous Men and Women realize the risks of the job; they know that at any moment their life can be placed in jeopardy. Or they may loose their life. What angers me is the fact that we as a civilized society forget that, our justice system forgets that, and when I heard that the shooter in the Mike Templeton case is only receiving 12 years for attempted murder on a Police Officer…I was very angry.

IT SHOULD BE LIFE!

And why shouldn’t it be, someone attempted to ends Const. Templeton’s life and in doing so they have left a lasting emotional impact on his life. Why shouldn’t this person have the same fate…life in prison.

Why can’t our justice system crack down on those who commit violent offences?

Have we become so lax in our way of dispensing justice that truly the revolving door has been cast open? Have we declared open season on violent crimes because they now come with lesser sentences?

It’s disgusting how someone who so blatantly and willfully chose to act and attempt to kill one of those who have chosen to protect us, has been cavalier about the whole event. How the sentencing is that which is similar to stealing a car or robbing a convenience store. (I don’t want to trivialize either except that the intent was to kill Const. Templeton).

Maybe we should really think…what kind of a system or government affords a luxury to those who wish to take away our lives?

Schuler for Leadership?

Leadership fever is in the air. Little by little names are starting to fall from the sky and credibility behind these names is culminating. Recently, Vic Toews had a Federal Fundraiser in Steinbach with Jason Kenney as the guest speaker.

From what I hear it was a love-in for Brian Pallister, until Mr. Schuler showed up. Now of course his presence makes sense. Part of the Springfield Constituency shares the Constituents of Vic Toews realm and they are colleagues, so why wouldn’t Ron support a fellow Conservative.

From what I hear when Ron was introduced he was welcomed with a resounding applause that came with cheers from many tables at the dinner.

So what do you think? I would say he is slowly getting his funds in line, support on paper and like many of the other possible candidates he is waiting on the Provincial Party to give them direction and set a date for the upcoming Leadership convention.

So the real question is this, is Ron in the running? Why don’t you tell me what you think about Ron Schuler as Leader.

And really, why couldn't Ron be a successful Leader? I think he can, he has vision, he believes in Party renewal (hence his interest and continued unfettered support for the PC Youth). His constituency remains one of the strongest and safest seats in Manitoba. He has the best form of Communication that any MLA has ever had and as a plus he is young, dynamic and energetic.

What is a selling point for me is his commitment to party renewal and his ability to garner grassroots support.

In other words Ron has my vote!

After all an opportunity like this is usually 20 years in the making.

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Paul Martin's frantic pre-election spending spree is expected to surpass $20 billion before next week's anticipated campaign call and promises new programs the Liberals hope will shore up vulnerable ridings and return the party to majority rule.
In fact, Liberal spending announcements were pouring out so fast yesterday, it was difficult to keep track of them all.
Despite the merit of some of the multibillion initiatives, such as $2 billion in payments and healing programs to atone for years of abuse in native residential schools -- a commitment that Conservatives said they would honour if they form the next government, opposition leaders weren't impressed.
"This is like somebody walking out of Canadian Tire with a canoe on their head without paying for it," said Deputy Conservative Leader Peter MacKay, on the cynicism it demonstrates. "Canadians see through it. They see it for what it is. They see it as a desperate Hail Mary pass from the prime minister and the Liberal party."
There have been at least 40 announcements this week alone, totalling billions for farmers, culture and arts communities, labour-market development initiatives, tsunami-damaged countries, the expansion of broadband Internet to remote communities, transit security measures, and help for East Coast fisheries.
More spending is on tap today including a billion-dollar announcement to help the beleaguered forest industry and money for a scientific study of mad cow disease.
Tomorrow will bring another $4 billion deal, hand delivered by the prime minister at the first ministers' meeting in Kelowna, B.C., to fight native poverty.
And on top of that, Finance Minister Ralph Goodale unexpectedly announced new guidelines for income trusts yesterday, something he said only a few days ago would not be ready until January, and Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan announced she will take former Ontario premier Bob Rae's advice and call a limited inquiry into the 1985 Air India bombing.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has tallied the bill at about $20 billion, and noted many of the announcements, especially regional initiatives under the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency umbrella, were made quietly without posting the usual notice on Canada News Wire to avoid detection by the national press gallery.
"These spending announcements are a sign of Liberal weakness, not strength. A government confident of its re-election would not be throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, at voters in order to save its political hide," said John Williamson, federal director of the taxpayers federation. "Mr. Martin's government is using tax money as the Liberal party's own political slush fund."
The last ditch attempt to woo voters comes just in time for Monday's non-confidence vote in the House of Commons, a vote that will almost certainly topple the fragile Liberals and trigger an election in mid-January-- risking the wrath of Canadians who overwhelmingly say they do not want a Christmas campaign.
The harshly worded Tory motion, which is backed by the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois, was released yesterday, and reveals the depth of animosity between the two sides.
"That the House condemns the government for its arrogance in refusing to compromise with the opposition parties over the timing of the next general election and for its "culture of entitlement," corruption, scandal, and gross abuse of public funds for political purposes and, consequently, the government no longer has the confidence of the House," states the motion.
The two most likely dates for an election are Jan. 16 or Jan. 23.
Harper, who announced yesterday the recruitment of whistleblower Allan Cutler to run in Ottawa Centre, said his party is geared up and ready for a long-overdue election.
"I'm looking forward to it. I think Canadians have been expecting it for awhile so I think now is a good time to get on with it," he said.
Cutler helped blow open the door on the Liberal sponsorship scandal.
NDP Leader Jack Layton said the Liberals have had 12 years to take action on issues addressed by the myriad of funding announcements, and have a long history of loosening the purse strings only at election time.
"I think Canadians have seen this so many times, they've become deeply skeptical," he said.
"I think they've become deeply skeptical of the Liberal party being mostly concerned about keeping itself and its friends in power... and they are going to look at these announcements through that lens."

Okay,

yes you can take down the government with a non-confidence motion. yes you can force an election, yes you can make the canadians go to the polls and yes you can form a new or existing government.

here is the thing. It is up to our Head of State to dissolve the Government of Canada, our new GG, must determine if any other party may form a coalition to continue with our governance.

Has anyone stopped to think that maybe....just maybe ole Jack Layton and our Prime Minister may work out a deal?

You form a coalition with the Libs and the Dips: It breaks down to something really interesting.

How about four dippers in Cabinet Positions with ole Jack as the DPM?

What it could happen! I know if I were in the PM's position I would make such a deal, I really would.

Here I am at the Vietnam Memorial, I have a special place in my heart for all War Veterans. I was talking to a friend yesterday and she asked me "If you had to go to war, would you?" To be honest I didn't even hesitate in my answer. "Of course I would", this wall I visited today proves to me that no solidier should be disgraced or forgotten for fighting for his/her country. I really don't care whether you believe that Vietnam was right or wrong, just believe in the soldier.

So I have some free time all of sudden. it's slowing down around here so I am going to take some time and add a little bit to the blog. how about some photo's!

This picture was taken my first night in Washington DC. It's of the Lincoln Memorial and it is probably as big as some of the office buildings in Winnipeg.

"Freedom Isn't Free", my little travels through these memorials made me realize that we are truly fortunate in the Western world. Here we can disagree with our government. Elected members can orchestrate attempts to throw them out and take over. In some places you would be shot, imprisoned or tortured.

But we have to remember that we didn't get this for Free, our fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents. May have served they may have died, so we can have these fundamental freedoms.

I took the metro here on Saturday night with my friend Tressley. Then I made her walk all the way down Pennsylvania Avenue. It was good times, great weather and not a soul around. According to the Secret Service, no one comes out during Winter.

Considering I want to enter the Foreign Service, coming here and meeting him only strengthened my resolve to come out and join.

Back from Washington DC

So I have been gone for six days and today is my second day back at work. Let's be fair the piles on my desk are high as is the list of phone messages. Am I bogged down? Hell yes! But was it worth it?

Definetly!

From November 16th to the 21st, I had an opportunity to visit two National Capitals, the first being our very own Ottawa.

Ottawa is magnificent, albeit if you live or work their you have a 90% chance that your profession in someway is either with the government, involes the government or consults the governement. Ottawa is truly a government town, with only one downside. It shuts down pretty fast in the evening.

However if you are a young guy or girl I highly recommend the Byward Market to start off your evening, then move towards Sparks street then cap your evening off on Elgin Avenue.

If your a political type and want to run into Conservative, NDP, Liberal or even the odd Bloc Staffer or MP...even MacLeans politcal pundit Paul Wells then head over to Darcy Mcgees. All good times!

Anyway, the National Youth Summit ended and the Asper Foundation put us on a bus and drove us down to the State of Virgina and into Washington DC.

Having never visited this City before I was pretty amazed at the Architecture, Layout, Design and overall presentation of this city.

It truly is an amazing city, I would call it "The New Rome". The arhitecture in some places is Neo-Gothic but Predominently you see Corinthian and Ionic Pillars, bulildings designed with doors that look fit for a god to enter, it is truly awe inspiring.

My highlight was of course seeing the White House and the West Wing.

However I would really recommend the National Holocaust Museum, I was raised as a man's man and even this museum brought tears to my eyes. It truly reaches out and takes hold of you.

I want to send thanks to the Asper Foundation for sponsoring and organizing this trip, it was amazing and in some way slife altering as well.

The Power of Choice...Greater than any Power I know

Well today was a very powerful and moving day. I attended the unveiling of two movies sponsored by the National Film Board. They were produced by Erwin Chartrand, who used to be an inmate at the the Stony Mountain Penitentiary.

The first film featured an artist named Patrick Ross. Patrick himself was an inmate at Stony Mountain, and during his time in Prison he used painting as a means to express himself...to better himself. As he said today, "I did this because, I want my son to be proud of his father, I want my family to be proud of me, I don't want the life I had before."

The second film was a vignette about an inmate at the prison who was being released, he had been a gang member and like Patrick had made regrettable choices in his life. The film portrayed the character regaining his faith and spirituality and upon leaving the prison his family was waiting for him, driving a white car and his former gang family was waiting for him driving a red car. What made it so powerful was his struggle with his faith, family and gang family and what choice he would make.

The imagery in each piece was powerful, but each centered on a core theme. Choice.

It is clear to me that the greatest power any person can have is choice, while some may believe that things happen for a reason it is our decisions, our choices that guide us down those paths. Maybe events happen based on the different paths we choose...I don't know, or maybe we have no control whatsoever and choice is just an illusion?

Either way, whether choice is an illusion or a reality the fact remains that the Power of Choice is greater than any other Power I know.

Here is an idea, after work today I am going to go to Sugar Mountain and buy a flat of Pic-a-Pop, why because I grew up on the stuff. It's a Manitoba tradition to go camping and bring Pic-a-Pop or sit by a fire you name it Pic-a-Pop can be their and it can be enjoyed.

Now your probably saying this is old news, Sugar Mountain has had the stuff for a while...well guess what I don't care I just got the idea in my head today that I wanted some Pic-a-Pop so I am gonna go get some.

What ever happened to Customer Service?

I once had a teacher tell me in High School that I would work at least 10 jobs in my lifetime, I thought he was nuts. I figured I would go to Universtiy (where I still am) then walk into a career and that would be the end of that.

Boy was I wrong! (I am currently in Job #8...I think)

But I did learn something about people. In business if you develop a good repore with your customers and sell a great product they will come back for more...as long as you treat them right.

Now the old adage "The Customer is always right" is a fallacy, the Customer doesn't necessarily have to be right as long as they believe they are right.

That being said, I had a bit of an altercation last night at a local drive through car wash called the Chamois. To be frank...they broke my interior dome light in my car. Now I will be honest, when you allow other people to start climbing in your car you take the risk of damage. But here's my thing, the light fell out of it's bracket and was left swinging back and forth over my head. I didn't notice it until I got into my car and began to drive. Do you think any of the employees were going to tell me...nope not a one.

After about an hour of them trying to fix it they informed me that "it really isn't broken" well if it's hanging by a wire I would call it broken. For my trouble I was presented with a nice coupon for a gratis "Gold Wash".

I guess they assume that when you break something in a customers car, they are going to come back and get their car washed again.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE!

They never once ever offered to pay for it but implied that it was either my fault or the vibrations from going down the line caused it to come out and their was no way any of their employees could have knocked it out.

Lesson One:

Don't accuse the customer of breaking something they clearly didn't break

Lesson two:

If the guy vaccuming your car is 6 feet tall and he is crawling into a 2 door Grand AM GT, good chance he is going to bang his head on something...like say, the dome light.

Lesson three:

Instead of hiding the damage, admit to it and offer a coupon. ( I know what their policy is, but don't hide your mistake assuming I won't see it)

Lesson four:

Don't tell me to lie to the car dealership when I take my vehicle there to fix the dome light.

And that's it, pretty simple if you ask me.

Hockey's Back...Who Cares!

I enjoy hockey as much as the next guy. I was born and raised in the Prairies, given a set of skates before I could walk and I even made an attempt at junior league hockey before the age of 10. I collected Upper Deck and Score Hockey cards, and my dad even ran a Sports Card shop in my home town of Selkirk.

But really, who cares if the NHL has been locked out for an entire season, who cares if they changed the rules and made the goalies pads smaller and the nets bigger…does it matter if hockey is back. Just because the NHL is gone doesn’t mean hockey stops and just because Sidney Crosby is playing for the Penguins or Wayne Gretzky is Coaching for the Phoenix Coyotes doesn’t require the hoopla that we are getting about the return of hockey.

So what if it’s one of our National Sports. The NHL is a league that doesn’t even cater to the average middle class Canadian! Who can fork out 75 bucks for a ticket, then 5 bucks for a beer and over-priced peanuts and $8.00 for nachos, for that price I could buy season tickets to the Manitoba Moose and enjoy hockey at a reasonable price.

Now don’t get me wrong I enjoy hockey as much as the next guy; my number 1 and number 2 teams are Ottawa and Calgary, but come on people it’s not like we were starved of hockey for an entire season. There is the AHL, the WHL and who could forget the MJHL (Manitoba Junior Hockey League) for those of you from my home province who are Selkirk Steelers fans. Hockey was everywhere, it didn’t disappear just the NHL and who really cares.

I can’t be sympathetic for a player who makes more in a year that I will never currently make in a lifetime. Somewhere these guys lost their heart for the game and for the fans, paycheques guided their ambition not scoring a goal or getting a breakaway. If this was truly about the “love of the game”, then we would have had an NHL season.

So really, why should we get excited about a game where our Stanley Cup is only going to go to another American team, to have champagne guzzled from its cup and to be hoisted above the heads of their team captain in a city that most of us will never visit. Don’t doubt me; you know it’s going to happen again.

The true players of this game are those who give 110% every time they hit they ice, they don’t care about the paycheque or the perks; they play for the love of the game. So next time the game’s on Friday Night, don’t ditch out your wife or girlfriend to watch a sport that never really left us support your local teams first and take her to the game, after all they didn’t stop when the NHL did.
